City of birches
The large number of birch trees in Umeå did not get there by chance. It was decided after a major fire in 1888 that birches should be planted along all the city's streets. And even today, every spring the municipality distributes birch samplings to anyone who asks for them.
Umeå University, one of the largest in Sweden, ensures that the city has a youthful feel. The university has four faculties: Arts, Medicine, Social Sciences, and Science and Technology.
The Elk House is an experience beyond the commonplace for those interested in animals and the natural world. Here you can approach the elks and meet them face to face. Norrland's largest tropical house is also located in Umeå. Holmsund's Tropical Greenhouse displays many animals, from venomous cobras and rattlesnakes to apes from the jungles of South America. Guided climbing offers a challenge to the brave. You can hire equipment and get to grips with the western wall of Balberget, with its horizontal distance of 140 metres and height difference of 100 metres. A floating sauna can be rented on the Ume River, or you may prefer to spend a day in the adventure water park Aquarena.
A visit to Bildmuseet, where entrance is free, offers the opportunity to view both Swedish and international modern art that is not shown anywhere else in Sweden. Special exhibitions here include scientific illustration, graffiti and sculpture.
The Gammlia open-air museum connects to the history of Västerbotten and tells the story of hard times, characteristic red cottages and folk music. Buildings of historical value have been transported here from various parts of the county and provide, together with guides in period clothing, an image of Norrland in the 19th century.
The city has invested greatly in becoming a centre of culture, and a major annual event is Kulturnatta. Umeå has been selected as the European Capital of Culture 2014.
