The city centre here is probably the most beautiful in Sweden, with esplanades and richly decorated stone houses in Neo Renaissance style. The stone houses are the result of rebuilding the city after the fateful fire of 1888, which left 9,000 people homeless. Sundsvall has always been a centre of trade, and the diversity of shopping is now growing even broader, both in the city centre and in Birsta, just north of the city. If you want to take it easy and relax instead, then the natural world is just around the corner. Go mushroom and berry picking, rambling, canoeing and fishing. Cycling paths, canoeing runs, riding tracks, footpaths, skiing routes and slalom runs are available here for all levels of ambition. There’s sport to watch here, as well, with elite teams in football, basketball, ice hockey and bandy, and world-leading swimming talent.
