Centre for Norway's black gold
Stavanger offers experiences for everyone. For those interested in culture, the city has more than 20 museums, and Stavanger Cathedral provides a glimpse of mediaeval Stavanger. This church is the city's oldest building, and entrance is free.

Stavanger is the centre of the Norwegian oil industry, and the Norwegian Petroleum Museum here tells the story of the black gold that has had such a profound effect on the country.

Lysefjorden, 20 kilometres long and surrounded by mountains, lies just outside of Stavanger. One of the most popular places to visit when in Stavanger is the Preikestolen, a rock plateau that lies 604 metres above the surface of Lysefjorden. The view from here is fantastic and exhilarating. You are also close to the Kjerag mountain, which is very popular among climbers.

There are ample opportunities for bathing in Stavanger. You can chose anything from challenging cliffs to sandy white beaches and green grass. Sola beach with its 2 kilometres of fine sand is a very popular destination.
