Costa Blanca
Just outside Alicante you will find the warmest coast in Spain, where the temperature in the water can reach 27 degrees in August, when you can also count on 12 hours of sunshine each day. Alicante is beautifully situated overlooking the sea and with rocky cliffs making a dramatic background.

Here you can take a walk on the Explanada d’ Espanya, a promenade of mosaic pavements under the palm trees and beside pleasant cafés, bars and taverns. There is a market here on Wednesdays, selling everything from clothes to ceramics, jewellery and hand-made baskets. You will also find wood and leather goods from Africa.

The beaches are clean, the harbour has been newly constructed and the wide boulevards are lined with bars and restaurants offering a lively night life. Most of the bars, pubs and clubs are in the area called "la zona".

Alicante is the culture capital of the Costa Blanca with its museums and castles. You must visit the Castillo de Santa Barbara which is like a fairytale castle, or "el barrio", the streets of the old town. Here you can enjoy life with the local people in the evenings. In el barrio there is an abundance of small exclusive boutiques selling mainly ceramics, bags, mats and also design plus mats.

And of course there is the wonderful food, with the national dish paella but also a lot of other dishes, often with rice. There are special rice restaurants called arrocerias. Other specialities are the unusual, local drink “harchata” made from almonds and the dessert “helado de turrón”, a nougat ice cream made from almonds and honey, which has been exported to other parts of the world.
